JW Labs JW Labs LLC · a software studio

JW Labs

JW Labs LLC is a California limited liability company. It builds software — its own products, and other people's.

What we make

4a is a daily podcast picker. Four topic queues a day rather than one endless feed, and one of the four is deliberately unlike the other three, so the thing you did not know to ask for still reaches you. It runs in a browser right now with no signup: open it.

longlive is a time machine through Taylor Swift's eras — a scrubbable, filterable timeline where every moment is sourced and dated, back through all twelve of them. Live on its own domain at longlivets.com.

Engineering and app development is the third thing. We take on outside work where the problem is the kind of problem we are good at: apps people use on a phone, products with a lot of real data underneath them, and software that has to be careful with people's data.

See the product rather than read about it

The clearest way to understand what 4a is building towards is to read one: three real assembled forays, in full, stretch by stretch.

A foray is a named sequence on one subject, cut from real episodes of real podcasts and played as a single run. The best of the three takes eleven separate interviews with eleven different scientists and re-cuts them into the forty-minute explanation none of those episodes could give on its own. Nineteen stretches. One show's back catalogue, answering a question none of its episodes asked.

That page is the fastest route to oh, that is what this is for.

The same problem twice

Both products take a large, messy body of real source material and make it navigable — while keeping every claim attached to the thing it came from.

For 4a the material is podcast audio: hours of speech with no table of contents, where the twenty minutes you wanted is inside an episode you would never have opened under a title that gave no clue it was there.

For longlive it is a decade of scattered reporting, where the interesting difficulty is that some of it is confirmed fact and some is widely-held fan interpretation — so the timeline marks which is which on the moment itself, not in a disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

Different subjects, one shape: a lot of source material, a reader who wants a path through it, and a hard rule that nothing gets asserted more confidently than its source supports.

What we will not do

Not aspirations. These are the reasons some other things are harder.

No engagement dark patterns. No streaks, no infinite scroll, no autoplay chains, no notification bait.

No advertising, no ad identifiers, and no third-party SDKs. 4a contains no advertising code, no analytics library and no crash reporter — none, rather than few.

We never rehost, transform or modify a publisher's audio, and we never strip advertising. The page for podcasters is the full statement, including how to have a show removed. The answer is yes.

No account unless you want one. 4a has no signup, no password and no profile, and most of what it knows never leaves your device.

Say less than is true, never more. Nothing on this website describes an unbuilt feature in the present tense, and a single page lists what is built and what is not.

The company

JW Labs LLC is a California limited liability company, and it owns and operates this domain. It builds with a short path from decision to shipped code: whoever decides what to build is whoever writes it, so a change of direction costs a conversation rather than a planning cycle.

Nothing we make is in the App Store or Google Play yet. 4a's web app is deployed and works; native iOS and Android shells are built from the same code and neither is in a store. More about the company.
